The specialists working at Sleep Medicine are also respiratory specialists. However, only Dr Pradeepan sees respiratory patients at Sleep Medicine, the other doctors see patients for sleep problems exclusively.

dr. antonio ambrogetti

Dr Ambrogetti graduated from the University of Padua in 1979-1980 and worked in Anesthesia and as an Intensive Care Specialist from 1980 to 1986 in hospitals in Florence, Careggi, and San Giovanni Valdarno.

He completed the Australian Medical Council Examinations (AMC) in 1986, and the Fellow of Royal College of Physicians (FRACP) in 1991. Dr Ambrogetti worked at The Royal Newcastle Hospital from 1988 to 1991 as a respiratory and sleep registrar.

Dr Ambrogetti completed a Diploma of Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Newcastle in 1992 and worked as a General Medicine and Respiratory Consultant at Belmont Hospital from 1991-2002. Also at Wyong Hospital from 1991- 2000.

Dr Ambrogetti was a (Visiting Medical Officer) VMO at The Royal Newcastle Hospital and John Hunter Hospital from 1991 until 2013.

He has worked in the area of Sleep Medicine since 1988 and created ‘Sleep Medicine"‘ the health service and has been the Medical Director of Sleep Medicine since 1991.

dr. shyamala pradeepan

Dr Shyamala Pradeepan is a Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Consultant at John Hunter Hospital and does private consultations at 50 Smith Street, Charlestown.

She completed her Respiratory and Sleep training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and later completed a Sleep fellowship at Sleep centre at Brigham and Women's
hospital attached to Harvard University in the United States.

Dr Pradeepan specialises in all sleep related breathing problems (sleep apnoea) and other non respiratory sleep disorders such as insomnia. She is particularly
interested in multimodal therapies in obstructive sleep apnoea.

Dr Pradeepan’s respiratory specialities involve cough and dyspnoea assessment, Severe Asthma, Breathing
disorders in motor neurone disease, Cystic fibrosis and non-invasive
ventilation. Her main interests are in the obese patients with breathing
problems.

Her research interests are in CPAP adherence and types of CPAP devices in the treatment of sleep apnoea.

Dr Pradeepan
personally triages all referrals both in the public and in the private sector,
therefore is able to see patients with urgent needs quickly.

dr. ALEXANDER GORDON

Dr Gordon graduated from the University of Adelaide in 2012, completing his medical internship and residency at the Lyell McEwin Hospital in South Australia. He moved to the Hunter Region in 2015 for basic physician training, followed by advanced training in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at John Hunter and Gosford Hospitals, acquiring his Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians at the start of 2021.

He is currently a Clinical and Translational Health Research Fellow and Conjoint lecturer with the University of Newcastle, whilst undertaking a PhD focussing on the use of medications to modify the body’s immune response in airways diseases such as Asthma and COPD. He has a special interest in airways diseases, respiratory infections and all aspects of sleep medicine.

He lives on Lake Macquarie with his family and is the proud father of two young boys. He loves getting out on the lake with friends and family or camping and hiking around the greater Hunter area. He’s also a lifelong lover of music and still finds time to play mandolin professionally locally.
